What Is There to Do in Jackson Hole If You Don’t Ski?

Jackson Hole is best known as a destination for skiing, but if you think there’s nothing to do here if you don’t ski, you’re mistaken! There is no shortage of activities to partake in, from outdoor adventures to fine dining and nights out on the town. Here’s what to do in Jackson Hole if you’re not up for hitting the slopes.

Grand Teton National Park

Jackson Hole is a unique vacation destination because a trip here allows you to enjoy the beauty of nature and bustling city life. Our luxury cabins in Jackson Hole, Wyoming offer the perfect base to explore both—and even if you’re more into art and shopping than hiking and camping, Grand Teton National Park shouldn’t be missed. Within its 310,000 acres you’ll find snow-capped mountains, lush forest landscapes, and crystal-clear lakes. Bring your binoculars and be on the lookout for wildlife.

National Elk Refuge

If you visit Jackson Hole in the winter, make time in your schedule to visit the National Elk Refuge. Elk from all around Jackson Hole and the Teton Mountains migrate to the National Elk Refuge when the temperatures begin to drop and they cannot find their usual sources of food. From December through March, you can take a sleigh ride through the refuge—this is a must if you have kids, but adults will enjoy it too!

Jackson Hole Playhouse

Downtown Jackson is full of cultural activities and the Jackson Hole Playhouse is one of its most iconic destinations. Housed in the oldest building in the city, the Jackson Hole Playhouse is a dinner theater that is known for both its stellar performances and its locally-inspired menu. Sure, you may want to enjoy a glass of wine with your dinner, but where else can you sip on sarsaparilla or huckleberry soda between bites of citrus-roasted Cornish hen, all while being serenaded by your waiter?

National Museum of Wildlife Art

Although this museum might look small, don’t let its size fool you. It houses a collection of over 5000 pieces of wildlife art. Its location makes it great for pairing with a visit to the National Elk Refuge, which can be viewed from the museum property. Kids love following the outdoor Sculpture Trail and visiting the Children’s Discovery Gallery, which features a puppet theater, reading nook, and animal costumes.

Art Galleries, Shopping, and Dining

Like any city worth its salt, Jackson is full of upscale restaurants and boutique retailers, but what really sets it apart is the abundance of art galleries in town. Even if you’re not in the market to make a purchase, if you appreciate fine art, it’s worth spending an afternoon gallery-hopping. Some popular destinations include Images of Nature by Thomas Mangelsen, Wild By Nature Gallery, The Brookover Gallery, West Lives On Gallery, and Rare Jackson Hole Gallery.

Dog Sledding

There aren’t many places in the continental United States where you can go dog sledding, but Jackson Hole is one of them! When you stay at Rustic Inn, we can arrange for you to go dog sledding in the Continental Divide/Togwotee Pass area, where you’ll experience breathtaking views of the Tetons, Wind River Range, Gros Ventre Mountains, and Absaroka Mountains.

Snowmobiling

If you like an adrenaline rush, you’ll love taking a snowmobile tour in Jackson Hole! There are a number of different areas that can be explored on a snowmobile, including Grey’s River, the Continental Divide, and the Gros Ventre area.

Winter Wildlife Safaris

Mountain animals migrate to the valley in the wintertime, which makes it the perfect time of year to spot wintering elk, bison, moose, wolves, bighorn sheep, mule deer, coyotes, trumpeter swans, and eagles. Be sure to bring your binoculars or camera!

Snowcoach Tours

When you’ve spent your vacation on-the-go, sometimes it’s nice to sit back and relax a bit. Snowcoach tours of Yellowstone National Park are perfect for a little R&R, while still having the opportunity to explore the beautiful scenery and wildlife Jackson Hole is famous for.

Snowshoeing

Never been snowshoeing before? Your trip to Jackson Hole is the perfect time to start! At Rustic Inn, we can assist you in arranging a snowshoeing tour led by an experienced guide knowledgeable about local animals, ecology, and lore.
